Sid Oakley built Cedar Creek Gallery in Creedmoor, NC over a lifetime. When he died, the people who loved him filled a church.
The preacher walked to the lectern — but instead of speaking, he bent the microphone down toward a small cassette player sitting on the edge of the pulpit. And pressed play.
The room went quiet.
"Well, I guess I am the last person
you all expected to hear from today."
Everybody laughed. And then everybody cried. Because it was Sid — his voice, his timing, his particular gift for walking into a room and making it feel like home.
He had recorded it himself. He knew his people would need to hear him one more time.
